KATIE

Elena was alone at her desk when Katie entered through the front door of the Public Defender’s Office.

“Hey, Elena,” Katie said as she came around the unoccupied reception desk that separated the waiting room from the employee area of the office. “Where’s Rachel?”

Rachel had been coming to work with Ashley every day. Sometimes she stayed at the office, and sometimes she didn’t. It just depended on the day. When she did stay, she usually remained out front with Elena. Rachel was only a year younger than Elena, so it made sense that the two girls were drawn to one another.

“She went to the library. Why? What’s up?”

Katie was lingering beside Elena’s desk. It wasn’t something she ordinarily did unless she needed something.

“Listen, Elena,” Katie said, pulling up a chair. “I need to ask you some rather sensitive questions.”

“Okay,” Elena said, removing her long, thin fingers from the keyboard of her computer and placing her hands in her lap. Katie had her full attention now. “What kind of questions?”

“Questions about your family. Well, actually, not your family specifically. They are more about the community as a whole.”

Elena cocked her head to the side, confused.

“I can tell that I’m not making a lot of sense. So, I’m going to just come out and say it. We have some witnesses that are claiming that some girls from the immigrant community have gone missing. Do you know anything about that?”

Elena shrugged. “I don’t know, but I can find out. Do you have ages for these girls?”

“No.” Katie shook her head. “Not for sure, but probably teenagers.”

“I’ll ask around. I overheard my mom one time talking about children getting snatched while immigrating, but she didn’t say where they’d disappeared. I was pretty little at the time, so I never asked my mom about it. She wouldn’t have told me. But she probably would now. She has another doctor’s appointment this afternoon. I can ask her about it if you’d like.”

“Yes, thanks,” Katie said, rising to her feet. “That’ll be a huge help.”

Elena nodded, turning back to her computer, and Katie headed down the hall to her office. She wished she could do something more to follow up on the lead, but she didn’t know anyone else that had ties to the meat-packing plant other than Stephanie Arkman, and she doubted Stephanie would even acknowledge that she employed undocumented workers. She suspected that Stephanie knew plenty about the disappearances, but that was only a guess. Besides, she was trying to keep her distance from Stephanie, not seek her out. The last thing she needed was for an Arkman to realize she was Michael Michello’s daughter.

When Katie reached her office, her body’s autopilot snapped on, following the same steps she had for the past seven months. She flipped on the light, pulled out her chair, shook her computer mouse, turned on the scanner, and then typed in her computer’s passcode. She was just about to open her email when the scanner crackled to life with George Thomanson’s familiar voice.
